The Tomatoes Are Coming

Get your club sandwiches ready: Tomatoes are officially arriving at Crown Town Farm. And not just any old tomatoes.

We’re excited to announce that our cherry tomato mix is just about ready for the summer harvest: That’s a juicy, complex blend of flavors led by Black Cherry, Queen Bee and Sungold varieties. As the fall settles in and the weather cools off, we’ll replant and reprioritize to bring out a more resilient blend, led by Black Prince, Strawberry Field and Harvest Moon cultivars.

All of the tomatoes we’re growing are non-GMO hybrids, making them more resistant to pests and more consistent than most heirlooms out there.

If you didn’t already know, the term “heirloom” usually applies to veggies considered unadulterated, passed down through the years without any genetic tweaks. While often thought of as sweeter and more flavorful, heirloom tomatoes are also less adaptable to changing climates, and suffer from larger susceptibility to disease.

In growing hybrid tomatoes, we like to think we’re striking the perfect balance between nature and nurture: All of our varieties are bred to mimic the color and flavor of heirlooms, while retaining a thicker skin against pests and pathogens.

While field-grown tomato season usually kicks off right around the end of June, we’ll likely keep the train rolling all the way through September. So don’t forget to look for us at the North End Farmers Market and Cotswold Farmers Market all the way through Labor Day, and grab a few handfuls of everyone’s favorite fruit.

…Veggie? We’ll let you decide.
